James D. Bond: My Patient Focus

"I was in excellent shape when a routine physical showed questionable results, and then within a month I was diagnosed with an incurable cancer – multiple myeloma. I felt like I'd been hit in the stomach and couldn't breathe."

"In the years since diagnosis, I've worked full time in my office, at home, in our firm's other offices or with a laptop in hotels and hospitals. My wife and I both became active in speaking to support groups. I range from serving as a 'myeloma mentor' with the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation to riding my bike to raise awareness for the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodges, where cancer patients stay for free."

"I've been fortunate to have seen our sons graduate from college, start their careers and marry. I'm looking forward to retirement, a day I thought I'd never see, and to spending more time with our grandchildren. One take-away from our story is that in the face of adversity, the right attitude and purpose continue to make a tremendous difference."

Kathleen Bond: My Caregiver Focus

"Focus on what you can control and what you can do. As a caregiver, it's important to stay objective for whomever you're helping. Never let yourself get too high on the good news, nor too low on the bad news. And be sure to take care of yourself so you can take care of the patient."
